NETWORK OPERATIONS CENTER

LIVE STREAMING

Brief Summary

Lectures that take place in the context of courses or events, on the premises of the University of Athens, can be broadcast live via Internet, as well as recorded, if premises are properly equipped. Live Streaming is carried out via the delos.uoa.gr platform.

The live streams and videolecture collection is designed as an auxiliary service to in-service teaching and is addressed to all kinds of students.

To watch the lectures, users do not need to install any software on their personal computer, tablet or mobile phone. Each device must be equipped with speakers or headphones.

It should be noted that access to the broadcast can be either open to all or controlled by code per section or per course, so that a limited group of users are allowed to watch.

The broadcast of the lecture may be combined with simultaneous automatic recording of the lecture, so that it can be made available to interested parties afterwards.

The organization of the recorded lectures and their distribution on the Internet is carried out through the OpenDelos platform. In addition, the lectures can be attached/inserted, in a second stage, on the e-Class platform.

Provided Services

  • Provision of technical support for the broadcasting/recording of events organized centrally by the NKUA.
  • Provision of Wowza-type video streaming servers.
  • Provision of consultancy services to departmental technicians for the supply, installation of the necessary equipment and its connection to the service.

Technical requirements for live streaming a lecture or event

  • Space: The lecture or event space needs to be connected to the Internet and properly equipped, i.e., equipped with a microphone, sound mixer and a web-based IP camera. However, it is possible to use portable equipment (camera, mixer, microphones, computer).
  • Technical support: In the case of an IP camera, the transmission is automatic. It is provided by the Network Operations and Centre (NOC) for events organized centrally by the University of Athens.

How do I watch them?

Users can watch live lecture broadcasts at the link:

live.uoa.gr

The link above shows all current live broadcasts at NKUA. The link of a particular live broadcast is activated and displayed exactly at the scheduled time as it is available until the scheduled end time. Beyond that time, the link is not displayed. Depending on access options, after the relevant live stream link has been selected, the user will be asked in a second step to enter a relevant password (if this has been set by the live stream supervisor staff).

Lecturers and students can inform the service at the contact email address regarding any upcoming technical problems, camera frame issues, etc. so that they can be repaired by the technical staff as soon as possible

Broadcast schedule

You can verify if a broadcast is scheduled by checking the live streaming schedule at the link below:

schedule.uoa.gr

To search for a Live stream, select the ‘Department' to which the transmission relates. You can also view the day's broadcast schedule in a list by selecting 'Schedule of the day'. The Live Streaming Schedule displays the scheduled broadcasts for the next 14 days.

Live stream management

The process of technical management and supervision of live broadcasts is a complex and demanding process.

It is the policy of NOC to oversee and provide access, capability and management of the OpenDelos platform for these procedures. However, regular supervision & management of lectures should be carried out in each faculty by the faculty’s members and their partners, to share the workload smoothly.

Support for the service is based on the "Best effort" model rather than "Guaranteed Quality". It does not guarantee 100% recording success due to the complex and automated technical solution. We recommend important events be filmed by external crew.

Quality control

Live streams are randomly checked regularly for quality and efficiency. If a live broadcast is found to be blank, then it is disabled, and the responsible teaching staff is informed via email.
