NETWORK OPERATIONS CENTER

STRUCTURE

The supervision of the Network Operations Centre (NOC) is performed by a three-member committee, consisting of the Vice Rector for Financial Planning and Development, who chairs the committee, the Scientific Officer and the Technical Officer. The Committee draws up the annual budget and accounts of NOC as the Chairman of the Committee will forward them to the competent bodies of the Foundation.

NOC is composed of six working groups (Computer Network, Voice Network, Technical Support, Systems and Application Development, Distance education and Videoconferencing Services, User Support) and the Secretariat, which are under the guidance of the Technical Manager as well as the general supervision, plus the oversight of the Scientific Manager.

The teams cover the standard procedures of NOC, while regarding the planning of extensions, upgrades, new services, ad-hoc working groups can be set up by the Technical Manager.

Roles & Departments

In detail roles and responsibilities are as follows:

  • The Scientific Officer is a faculty member of the Institution, with a subject related to the Centre's scope while he/she has the scientific supervision of the Centre to provide high quality services to the University Community, as well as the scientific responsibility of the relevant research and development projects. Additionally Scientific Officer makes recommendations to the competent bodies of the Institution on matters of policy development of NOC and the provision of new services and technologies, in collaboration with the Technical Manager.
  • The Technical Manager coordinates the activities of the Centre, supervises the studies of extensions and upgrades, assigns responsibilities to the Centre's staff and, in cooperation with the Scientific Manager, makes recommendations to the competent bodies of the Foundation on issues relating to the provision of new services and technologies.  He/she supervises the staff and is responsible for the coordination of the administrative and technical procedures of the Centre.
  • The Computer Network Team is responsible for the smooth and proper operation of the computer network for the University of Athens. In detail the team is responsible for planning extensions and upgrades, drafting technical specifications for network equipment, configuring and managing network devices, monitoring the performance and adequacy of equipment, as well as supervising the implementation and maintenance of the computer network.
  • The Voice Network Team is responsible for the smooth and proper operation, management and maintenance of the voice network of the University of Athens, the design and implementation of network upgrades and extensions, the development of applications used in its management, the management of voice services (voice mail, unified messaging service, voice conferencing service, provision of telephone facilities), the management of the Voice Over IP service, the provision of telephony service usage statistics, user support and customer service.
  • The Technical Support Team is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of the telecommunications network cable infrastructure, meeting requests for new connections, transfers and faults in the telephone and computer network, the installation of telecommunications and support equipment in the telecommunications premises, preparing, studying and carrying out procedures for the implementation of requests for network cable extensions, managing and monitoring their execution, as well as submitting requests for new equipment supply.
  • The Systems and Application Development Team is responsible for the development, management, maintenance and documentation of the computing and storage system infrastructure, as well as the management of the data center of the University of Athens, the development of solutions for hosting applications in the central infrastructure of the institution, the study and integration of new innovative technologies in order to ensure the uninterrupted operation and optimization of all large-scale central services with high availability requirements, the writing of technical specifications and the development of new solutions for the hosting of applications in the central infrastructure of the University of Athens, the development of solutions for the hosting of applications in the central infrastructure of the institution, the study and integration of new innovative technologies in order to ensure the uninterrupted operation and optimization of all large-scale central services with high availability requirements, the writing of technical specifications and proposals, the configuration of the physical and logical architecture of academic and administrative IT applications, the development of web applications and the development of middleware applications, as well as the providence of services: User Registration and Management of the Electronic User Register (LDAP, Webadm), Interconnection of the Student Directory Service, Electronic Messaging (Email, SMS, AddressBook), File Sharing (Web File Manager, Share), Collaboration and Support of Workgroups (BSCW), Password Management.
  • The e-Learning and Videoconferencing Services Team is responsible for the services: eClass, Academic Video Lectures, Live Broadcasts, Conference/Event Videorecording, and Videoconferencing. The team's scope of work includes the design, study, development and management of advanced services, the design and development of Digital Courses, the writing and submission of proposals for related development projects, the management and technical coordination of related projects, the supervision and coordination of the support team for all the above services, as well as user information and training.
  • The User Support Team is responsible for providing telephone services to the users of the University of Athens on the telecommunication field, daily checking and reporting the status of telecommunication equipment, creating and activating e-mail accounts, activating network sockets and providing data to applicants, and promoting announcements.
  • The Secretariat is responsible for secretary and accountant support of the Center.
