The University of Athens data network meets the need for internal connectivity and permanent access to the Internet, providing a fast and reliable means for members of the academic community. Ethernet usability, switches and routers and through the installed cable infrastructure, it provides end users with a permanent internet connection. Currently more than 30 routers and over 150 switches are in operation, providing approximately 12,000 Ethernet ports.
To adequately meet the existing needs, the network follows the distribution and the specificities of the buildings. There are four major concentrations of network equipment (Ilision Campus, Goudi, Athens City Centre and University Hospitals), which are interconnected using a 10Gbps fibre optic ring. There is also a 1 Gbps connection between the University Campus and the PHED facilities in Daphne, via optical fibre.
In addition to the large facilities of the University, there are many other small buildings scattered in the wider Athens area, which serve the needs of various departments. In these buildings ADSL connections are used and routers have been installed which create tunnels with a central router on the campus to become part of the University's network and thus access the centrally provided services.
The central Internet connection is through the GRNET (National Network for Research and Technology) and is of the order of 10 Gbps, and there is another 1 Gbps connection with the National Technical University of Athens, with which there is a reciprocal agreement to offer secondary Internet access.
The overall topology is displayed at the illustration below:
